What came first, the chicken or the egg? This causality dilemma helps us to understand the complexity of the question, “Does sales or marketing drive a company’s success?” In order to analyze a query such as this, we must first identify what each of the two categories brings to the equation, and then we can identify how to make a personal marketing plan in order to generate sales.

Seemingly a company could thrive with a focus on either marketing or sales and be successful. Marketing could bring clients in through proper advertising and a well planned strategy, and a sales team would not be necessary. Conversely, it seems sales would not need marketing either, by simply providing their own leads and bringing in their own clientele through research and hard work. In theory they are individually functioning divisions that can operate independent of one another, but in reality, the two are very necessary and must work together

When you think of sales, you typically think of overwhelming salespeople pushing a product that customers may or may not want. While this is true, sales has a very important purpose in all organizations. They execute the efforts of the marketing team and put it into action. The sales department in an organization can best be described as a special operations team in the military, and the marketing department is their Intel. Military Intelligence gathers all the information necessary for a mission and then distributes their findings for the Special Ops Team to execute.

Similarly, when you think of marketing, you think of massive amounts of e-mails piling in your inbox with special offers. While this may be true, marketing is crucial in providing leads, and getting a brand name recognized. They handle the leg work for the sales team, so the sales team can focus on closing business and getting potential prospects to use a product or service. Without the advertisements, e-mails, and various marketing plans though, a company would be relatively unknown.

At Copper Conferencing, an audio and web conferencing provider, marketing and sales work together harmoniously in order to achieve similar goals. The Sales Director and Marketing Director ensure that they are not only on the same page with current marketing campaigns, but also, that they are focusing their efforts and teams to maximize their return on investment. Audio conferencing and web conferencing is an industry where most companies are realizing the services incredible benefits. By reducing costs and travel expenses, conferencing is changing the way companies operate and do business. Through expertly managed marketing and sales strategies, Copper Conferencing is quickly proving that a perfect balance of the two departments is a key to success.

Now that we see that sales and marketing are uniquely individual, yet very complimentary of one another, we can see how using a successful marketing plan in conjunction with a well executed sales team can generate new business. Copper Conferencing is a perfect example of this through a recent campaign. Copper is running a Business Webinar Series allowing speakers across the country to show their expertise to an array of business professionals. This shows our conferencing services to potential clients around the nation, and at the same time, generates leads for the sales team to follow up with. Remember, a subtle alliance between two divisions can bring powerful returns in the business world.

Although it seems like it, I haven’t been in the conferencing industry my whole career. In fact, I’ve done some pretty interesting things – taught English, worked for a newspaper, wrote a book. One of the most gratifying things that I’ve ever done is to start and run an adolescent wilderness therapy program – Phoenix Outdoor.

So what is wilderness therapy and how does this fit in the picture of a long-standing career in conferencing? Adolescents that engage in behavior that put them at significant risk sometimes run out of options when parents can’t correct that behavior despite the best efforts of therapists, psychiatrists, or school counselors. Wilderness therapy removes adolescents from their risky environment and places them in a natural setting so that issues driving negative behavior can be identified and addressed as they hike, camp, work with a peer group and talk to therapists.

One of the common threads in families we worked with was that parents were crushed by having to commit their child to a program like Phoenix. Instead of planning for prom, watching the Friday night high school game or helping with homework, they have to face the fact that their child snorted cocaine, failed in school, or ran away from home. They have to explain their child’s absence from home and school to family and friends that may not understand. They feel alone and isolated.

Getting parents to come out of their isolation and gain support from each other was critical to helping the family heal while their kids were in treatment. Phoenix kids came from all over the country so they couldn’t come to the program to get to know each other. Fortunately, I was in the teleconferencing industry and relied on the service to connect these people together.

Each week, they attended a Monday support conference call where the parents could talk about their feelings and how having a child in treatment affected their family. They came to a webinar where we dealt with common issues such as setting boundaries or Internet addiction. They visited with a family therapist over conferencing. With minimal cost and no disruption to family routines, parents and siblings were able to vent, heal, collaborate and work through a plan for success once the child completed the program. They were no longer alone.

The program succeeded and was later acquired by a much larger player in the industry. Why wilderness you ask? I was one of those parents whose child ran out of options, who tried everything and who sent their child to the woods – in January! I was embarrassed, traumatized, confused, and yes alone. What I wouldn’t have given to be on a conference call with others so I could talk about it.

This is a call to treatment providers everywhere whose families are spread out while children are in treatment. Conferencing is easy, inexpensive and can make a powerful impact on the lives of families who are struggling to heal and move forward. They need to know that others have the same problems and issues, that they aren’t bad parents, and they are not alone.

It’s rained more in Atlanta in the last 30 days than in the last 3 years. One of my dear friends has a wonderful house with a sloped backyard that flattens out at the basement door. Over the last 2 weeks, I’ve been helping take out wet carpet and the most absorbent carpet pad I’ve ever seen. Although much of the furniture remained intact, she decided it was time for a furniture upgrade.

Copper Conferencing has a number of young people working for the company with several of those individuals living on their own for the first time since college. What you and I might consider furniture cast offs, they consider those cast offs a great way to furnish an empty apartment. I took two of our young people over to her house and they instantly fell in love with the older Rooms To Go green couch. A few minutes later, it was strapped down and loaded on the top of my Murano. Since it was only going a few miles, I considered this would be a simple, quick exercise of getting the couch over and into the first floor of the townhome – no big deal, right?

Jace and the couch

Quite a bit of time passed and I started to get worried. It seemed secure on the roof, but did it slip off? What was the delay? They came back and I was on the phone so keys were passed over and I didn’t think any more of it until one of the young men came out of the office and sheepishly let me know the couch had gotten stuck in the front doorway. Not only could they not get into their townhome, but their neighbor couldn’t get in as well.

The way is clear

I called my very handy husband who loaded all kinds of tools in his car and hurried over. I envisioned having to hack through the door frame and all types of disruptive activities to dislodge this wedged-in couch. He went to his toolbox, pulled out a handy-dandy Philips-head screwdriver and in moments the legs were taken off and the couch slipped inside.

What’s the lesson in all this? Think before you act? Call for help and advice? Don’t force it if it doesn’t fit? I think all of these lessons are good, but the one I took away was that sometimes all it takes is a simple tool to do the job. When people ask me about what I do for a living, conferencing may seem like a simple tool, but sometimes that’s all that is needed to do the job. It works from every phone, doesn’t require instructions, and doesn’t require any set up. Dial the phone and you’re in – a simple tool.

But over a conference call or webinar, you can cement business deals, reorganize your company, set sales strategy, and train everyone on the latest product. Conferencing is that simple tool that gets a lot done.

By the way to the gentlemen who now own the couch, I have more furniture, but if you take it, then let’s think before you act, look before you leap, have a plan and some simple tools to get the stuff through the door!

It’s amazing to think about the number of associations around the country. For just about every professional group, for every trade, for every cause, you will find an association. Associations are quite helpful for their members because they provide information about the industry or membership, training, advocacy, events and access to resources.

Associations are usually divided into management teams, committees or member organizations. Getting these groups together to discuss their objectives and agenda is often managed over conference calling. To give you a good example of how associations function, I’d like to go inside one of our customers operation – a bar association for a major city. Even though the members are all contained within the city, managing schedules and fighting traffic makes live meetings hard, so conferencing is used to get these groups together on a regular basis.

This particular association has an executive director and a management team that run the overall association. This team meets monthly to discuss budget, initiatives, strategies to increase membership and strategies to serve their membership with valuable services.

Because the practice of law is specialized, this association is divided into “sections”, each of which is devoted to a specific practice of the law such as litigation, commercial real estate, or family law. Members of these sections meet via conference call quarterly to discuss issues affecting their particular practice of the law and to develop strategies to offer Continuing Legal Education for their particular specialty.

The association also has a number of committees. Committees are usually formed around a specific event or issue. For example, a number of committees exist to run charitable events and raise money for causes. Additionally, this association is politically active, discussing their positions on tort reform and governmental regulations.

Each section and committee has a budget that is set by the association management team and conferencing expenses must be tracked back to the committee or section. Conference call moderators can input a billing code into the system at the time of the call that will show up on the invoice. Using the Connect To Copper customer portal, administrators can look at conference call usage reports and add their billing codes prior to the conferencing invoice being delivered. This makes it easy to separate expense and meet budget requirements.

Conferencing makes meetings, trainings, and committee activity logistically possible and affordable. Webinars are also used to offer informational and training sessions for the membership creating further value for the association. It’s hard to imagine how associations would function without this communications tool.

You can try Copper Conferencing free for 30 days and make your life easier. Read more now!
