Most of you don’t know that I started life as a middle school English teacher, still my favorite all time job. I spent the vast majority of my time teaching students how to write, a skill that I hope has served them well over the years. Part of the secret to good writing is to know how to be concise, getting your point across using a few powerful words.

Good Morning America on ABC has a fun segment that they call “Your Three Words” which couples viewers’ very short videos with 3 words that deliver a message. You’ll see a traveling college student whose words are “Send Money Now!” or “Practice Makes Perfect” from a Little League team holding their championship trophies. You get the picture.

I thought I would use GMA’s technique and use my three little words to describe Copper Conferencing’s new service, Conduct.

Make Life Easier
We’ve been inundated recently with the news that the Dow has dropped below 12,000, that jobs aren’t coming back and that budgets are still tight. That means that we have to learn to continue to do more with less. Conduct takes the process of webinar and event management to a new level and makes life easier by creating and managing the marketing and management activities without a lot of staff and with minimal expense.

No Training Needed
Going through the frustration of trying to figure out a piece of technology, of having to ask your I/T department for help or having to spend hours in training takes away from the job of creating, marketing and selling. Conduct is self-directed with no training needed.

Promote, Manage, Deliver
In order to execute a webinar, you have to promote it to your audience, register people who are interested in attending, remind them to show up and manage all of the communication needed to get them into the call. Once you go through the 5-minute set up process, Conduct creates the promotional email, the sign up page and all of the registration and reminder emails automatically.

Be a Hero
When you generate high quality leads, attendance on your webinar, or a great promotional campaign and you do it at a fraction of the cost of trying to manage multiple systems and services to get the job done, you’re going to get noticed. That’s how people get recognized and promoted – by delivering revenue and reducing expenses!

OK, you get the “your three words” concept. Here are my last three words – “Try It Now”. Copper has just launched Conduct and for a limited time, you can try it for free. Just go to the Sign Up Page on this website and check it out (whoops, another 3 words!) – No contract required – there I did it again!

One of my favorite concepts on morning television is the “Just One Thing” segment on Good Morning America. Sam Champion, normally the hunky weather guy, focuses on one small thing you can do to “green” your environment at home. Sam has offered suggestions on changing your cookware strategy, purchasing eco-friendly televisions, solar powered battery chargers and changing your habit of using plastic packaging.

Even though most of us may not consider ourselves as environmentalists, as consumers and business people we need to start thinking about those “just one thing” commitments we can make to cut our consumption of environmental impacting activities. Most of us generally don’t make changes unless there is either a “carrot” or a “stick” that motivates us to do so. It’s generally the “stick” or a significant enough pain point that is the better catalyst for change.

Here is the stick right now. Although there is plenty of oil being produced in the Middle East, there is a significant amount of conflict in oil-producing countries. Egypt changed hands; Libya is in the middle of a civil war and the unrest of suppressed populations has spilled over into countries that had experienced little historic conflict. Oil speculators have driven up the cost of a barrel of oil to sustained, record heights.

How does this affect us? For every penny that the price of a gallon of fuel rises, the airline industry loses $175M a year. How are we all going to feel when gasoline is at $5 a gallon or over or an average airline ticket is over $500? Dependence on oil has become America’s new crack cocaine habit and it’s going to be painful to make some changes. However, I think that the stick is now big enough to make us pay attention.

Here are some “just one thing” ideas that I think we can execute today to help us get “off the crack”:
•	Change the work schedule of your commuters and let them work from home one or more days a week. Monitor their productivity electronically. In today’s world, you don’t have to see someone to know they are working, given all the ways we have to keep track of people.
•	Meet virtually. Do we really need to drive all over town for a meeting that lasts an hour. Web conferencing is easy to use, inexpensive and very effective.
•	Reconsider your travel strategy. Do you really need to drive to the airport, squeeze in that crowded airplane seat and spend that amount of money on hotels, rental cars and meals? Can you use other ways to attend to business virtually and save travel for when it’s really needed?
•	Look around your office and think about what you consume that is oil based. At Copper, we stopped buying bottled water (bottles made of petroleum products) and switched to a water cooler with reusable containers.

Of course, if you want to take it further, there are a number of other things you can do. Here is what I plan to change:
•	I’m purchasing a “street-legal” electric golf cart to run my errands. I figured that quite a few trips are within 5 miles of my house.

Although you may not conscientiously acknowledge the many different sounds you hear on a daily basis, I guarantee you that some of what you hear resonates more with you, positively or negatively, based on the voice. Voice is an incredible medium. Voice can represent the tenor of an article or it can literally be the someone’s voice. The tenor, inflection, emotion and even the timing of voice can make the difference in wanting to do something versus steadfastly rejecting a product or idea.

The Power of Persuasion
Over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed a particular and very distinctive voice being used to advertise two products — trucks and beer. Now, I must admit that the voice being used is attached to an actor whose work I enjoy but hearing the commercials got me to thinking about why I enjoyed his work. Was it because he is a great actor? Was it because his films are stellar works of cinema? Or perhaps, was it because I find his voice particularly pleasing? The sum total of this reflection was the winning voice. Yes, the voice for these commercials makes me want to run out and buy a Dodge Ram Truck even though I just purchased a Ford and buy Coors beer, even though I don’t drink beer. Why? Because I associate the voice with a pleasant experience, as trustworthy and the inflection of his voice is appropriate to the sales pitch. For those who have yet to guess, the voice is that of Sam Elliott.

What’s in a Voice?
Now you’re thinking about whose voice you’ve heard recently and how it affected you. That’s good. In our daily lives, we have so many opportunities to use our voice in a persuasive manner — for good or for evil. Okay not really evil but it is entirely possible to use one’s voice in a way that negatively impacts the people around us. Copper Conferencing has used voice for many different aspects of our marketing but also, and more importantly, for our audio conferencing service. If you are a Copper customer, you’ve may have heard the voice on our One Minute Skill Builders. It’s a pleasing female voice that gently engages you and guides you through how to use Copper’s audio or web conferencing services.

Copper customers also hear another voice. The voice greets our customers every time they do a conference call. In early 2010, we changed our audio conferencing voice to a male voice at the same time we upgraded our audio conferencing services. Now, you might not think a small change such as a greeting voice would make a big impact, but it did.

Some of our customers thought the voice was a nice change. Some of our customers said they were indifferent as long as they could continue to conduct their business. However, some of our customers provided feedback that the voice did not give them the same pleasing experience as had the previously female voice. Okay, I’ll fess up and say that some of the customer feedback we received was emphatic and down right passionate that the male voice was negatively impacting their customer experience. We paid attention and were persuaded by our customers to return to a kinder, gentler female voice. As one customer put it “Thank you for this nice update. It is good to know your company is an interactive one that listens to customers.”

And about Sam Elliot?
Yes ladies, he has a great mustache. And guys, if you can grow a mustache like Sam’s, congratulations. Women may not say it, but many like a good looking guy with a mustache. I wonder if Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck know each other?
