Copper Legal addresses the growing need of law firms to manage and recover costs, create efficiency among the administrative staff and find creative ways to develop greater contact with potential clients.
Copper Legal provides a full suite of audio and web conferencing services for the day-to-day needs of the firm. Using Copper Legal’s webinar services, law firms can offer CLE seminars, and offer educational webinars to clients, colleagues, the general public or to specific market segments.
The older you get, the more nostalgic you get. Normally, I’m not given to looking back, but sometimes I just can’t help it. This summer, my small high school in LaGrange, Georgia is holding a multi-year class reunion. It’s been a while since I’ve been to one of these, but this one is appealing because I get to visit with more people I went to school with.

This is going to tell you how old I am and how much of a small Southern town I come from. We had one movie theater, one hamburger place and one pizza place. You couldn’t buy alcohol because the county was dry and our schools weren’t integrated until I was a junior in high school. The big activities were driving around (gas cost $.25 a gallon), going to the movies once a week, and “parking.” (Don’t ask me about parking!).

Those were simple times where we had to make our own fun, find things to keep us engaged and navigate through some profound changes in society. During high school, I saw the end of the Vietnam War, the end of school segregation and the beginning of the drug culture. Times will never be as simple, as clear and as innocent as they were back then.

I’ve been in the conferencing industry for 20 years and I have to acknowledge the end of an era for a technology and a company I was very fond of. A small group of entrepreneurs founded a company in the ‘90’s called Evoke that built the best mousetrap I’ve ever seen in conferencing. They automated an audio conference call where you never had to worry about making a reservation or that there wouldn’t be space available for your call. They added a simple web interface to control your call that was a forerunner of the way we all use web conferencing today.

The founders (Paul and Todd) always saw themselves as a web conferencing company, raised millions of dollars in the investment world and launched a competitive strike against the incumbent WebEx. What they failed to realize is that in reality they had built a better mousetrap for audio conferencing by streamlining how a call was managed and conducted. Their technology was way ahead of its time and the rest of the industry followed their lead.

WebEx proved to be the giant in the web conferencing industry, and Evoke who became Raindance, never gained enough traction to be huge and make their investors rich. In 2006, the management team at Raindance finally gave up and sold to their company to industry giant InterCall.

Sometimes, as in this case, the bigger company fails to recognize that what they bought extends beyond the revenue and profits. Raindance had an incredible corporate culture, young and talented employees, an advanced technology and data system, a well-developed web product, and loyal customers. InterCall, in their infinite wisdom, decided to dismantle all of it.

On September 1, 2010, the audio conferencing technology that was simple to use, always reliable and so advanced is being turned off. Because InterCall never recognized its uniqueness, its potential and its possibilities, they ignored it, favoring a system that is more complex with lots of moving parts. They spent tens of millions of dollars trying to customize a data collection and billing system when the one they purchased had much of the components of what they needed.

There are still a number of customers that use the Raindance platform and they are going to be in for a shock to their system. Everything about their conferencing experience is going to change and not necessarily for the better.

It’s the end of an era in the conferencing industry and I’m sad about that. I think the customers are going to find that being given lots of billing choices, more features than they will ever use, and a system that is not nearly as streamlined and elegant is going to be a step down in the way they do business.

Paul and Todd, thank you for what you brought to the industry, to the type of company you created and the culture that you promoted. Thank you for thinking outside the box and creating a better way to do business.

Dan Z.

Throughout my life I have always greatly appreciated my friends. Friends can offer you advice from an outside perspective. If they are good friends, they will also tell you the truth about a situation even if it’s the last thing in the world you want to hear. Friends give you someone to talk to, someone you can open up to without having to fear rejection or false judgment. And sometimes, friends give you someone to just be around in total silence while you contemplate things in your life. If you’re really lucky, your parents know how to be your friend as well as your caretaker. They guide you through the trials and tribulations you face, while still respecting your decisions as an individual.

As a child, I was a part of the over 50% of marriages in America that end in divorce. This turned my world upside down and caused me to lose faith in my ability to trust people. Luckily for me, I had already made a group of about 8 or 10 good friends. Probably without their knowledge, they became my solid foundation for an otherwise frightening and unstable experience known frequently as Life. As time went on, a few of these friends grew distant but new friends became a part of this growing foundation. My parents also reestablished themselves in my life as a source of trustworthy knowledge and experience. I slowly grew out of my long lasting depression, and life took on a whole new vibrancy that begged to be shared.

These events are what led to me thinking of myself as “The Organizer” within my ever growing group of close friends. Because my friends played such a pivotal role in helping me through what I still believe to be the most emotionally traumatic event of my life, how could I be anything but grateful? In order to show my gratitude to my friends, I frequently organize fun events for everyone. Sometimes it’s going out to dinner with a noisy group of 15. With age we have become slightly belligerent, but we make up for our raucous behavior and our aggravation of some guests and waiters with our good tips. As the organizer other times it’s me buying 15 tickets ahead of time to an Atlanta Hawks basketball game, and then dealing with the hassle of collecting from everyone. Whatever event I decide to organize, it’s always a time for fellowship and interaction.

If there is one thing in life I’ve learned, absence leads to more than making the heart grow fonder. It often also leads to relationships atrophying into a mere shadow of their previous brilliance. This also seems to be true in the business world. Communication is a key component of any organization that hopes to function at optimal performance. It allows a unified purpose to be conveyed to every member of an organization. It helps coordinate due dates and goals throughout the company. It also helps people connect with each other on a more personal level. I never mind doing a favor for someone I know personally, but I sometimes find it hard to motivate myself to be inconvenienced for someone I don’t know.

With the rapid increase of globalization, many companies are spread out between different regions. In response to this conferencing has become less of an unnecessary benefit and more of a commodity. Although not true for every company, most companies can find unparalleled benefits from conferencing. It allows for an ease of interaction between company members that 50 years ago was almost unthinkable. Now all I need to do is find a way to implement conferencing in my group of friends, and we will never have to worry about our relationship deteriorating = )

Copper Conferencing Launches Copper Mobile a Free iPhone App

Audio Conferencing iPhone App Complements Nationwide Local Dial-In

Denver, CO & Atlanta, GA – May 18 — Copper Conferencing today announced the launch of Copper Mobile, a free audio conferencing application for the Apple iPhone. Copper Mobile gives iPhone users instant connections to conference calls, a way to locate Copper’s nationwide local dial in numbers, and a link to Copper’s On Demand audio conferencing commands.

“Copper Mobile for the iPhone is just the first of Copper’s new applications for mobile devices,” said Carolyn Bradfield, CEO of Copper Conferencing. “Copper Mobile is immediately available for Copper On Demand customers using the iPhone and will be followed by other mobile applications including the Blackberry device.”

Copper Mobile is designed to help traveling professionals easily host or join a conference call with one touch. Copper Mobile is integrated with Copper’s Nationwide Local Dial-In service and gives iPhone users a way to quickly locate a local number in their area so they can initiate or attend a conference call. Copper Nationwide Local Dial-In service launched in March 2010 provides a lower rate for On Demand audio conferences every time customers use a local dial-in number.

“If you are on the move, fumbling for your dial in number and conference ID on your cell phone can be distracting,” Bradfield added. “Copper Mobile lets you connect in a single click to a conference call. You can store your call connection information along with other audio conferences you regularly attend.

In the coming months, we will expand Copper Mobile beyond the Apple iPhone to the Blackberry and all Nokia devices. Copper Mobile is available from www.copperconferencing.com and as a free download from the iTunes store.”

Copper Conferencing continues to provide easy-to-use conferencing tools for simpler collaboration. In addition to Copper Mobile, Copper has recently added new features to its On Demand audio conferencing service including Nationwide Local Dial-In, additional call controls, new security features, sub-conferencing capabilities and the ability to add personalized greetings to each call. Copper’s web conferencing services include Adobe Connect Pro, Microsoft Live Meeting, Cisco WebEx and WebPresentNow and when combined with Copper’s On Demand audio provide a complete and integrated conferencing solution.

When it comes to buying anything, I would not describe myself as a shopper. A shopper is a person who gets pleasure from looking around, seeing what’s out there, finding things that fill a want and not a need and spending time in the social experience that shopping can often generate. I am so not that person, even though a lot of my friends are. Maybe that comes from growing up in a small southern town that had 1 department store and no Sears or Kmart. Shopping just wasn’t that fun.

I would however describe myself as a competitive bargain hunter. I have very few “wants” and most of my needs are already met. I’m not fashion forward, but have things that are useful year after year. A competitive bargain hunter enjoys the thrill of the hunt and the excitement of finding the bargain. We are willing to invest time to weigh the options, know the discounting patterns of our favorite retailers, and invest in the research on Internet sites such as craigslist.

It baffles me when I run into people who are satisfied with paying more than then need to for products or services they use regularly. Sometimes this happens because they have little to no financial incentive to save money. As an example, insurance companies don’t really motivate their customers to be frugal. For my high cholesterol, my doctor originally prescribed Lipitor and the drug did its job. My number dropped by 40%. I was elated. However, even after the co-pay, the price was over $60 per month. I did my research and found that there were a number of generic drug equivalents and asked my doctor to write a new prescription. I took it to Wal-Mart and for $4 came away with the new drug. My cholesterol numbers didn’t go up. If Aetna would reward me for shopping around, there’s no telling how much I could save on their behalf!

Stay tuned and I’ll blog about how Ann Taylor, Kohl’s, and Banana Republic fund my very large Christmas list when I shop the months after Christmas with coupons, emails to alert me when the price drops, and extra percentages off on special days. Their styles are classic and everyone seems to be happy with the cashmere, sweaters, and classic styles.

Being a competitive bargain hunter requires that you do a little research, compare and contrast and be willing to slightly alter how you do business. Given the fact that I’m a competitive bargain hunter in my personal life, one can expect that I would translate that spirit into Copper Conferencing. Here is where we are going to help you start the process of saving money by just changing your habits slightly.

Most of us dial toll-free numbers to get into a conference call. However, most of us are taking those calls from our offices or a fixed location. And even if we take those calls from our cell phone, we usually have plans that give us long distance for free. I started asking myself, “Is dialing a toll-free number to get into a conference call really necessary?” And if not, what is the alternative?

I stumbled on the fact that there are networks of local dial in numbers that can access a conference call exactly the same way a toll-free number can. Dialing a local number is always less expensive. There is no long distance charge for the user and it cost less money for me as the provider to offer it. If customers are willing to slightly alter how they enter a call, then they can save money. Get ready, because Copper is going to show everyone how to use local dial in just as easily as you use a toll free number. You can join my competitive bargain club with this one simple conferencing secret.

I hate paying more than I have to for anything…….for my monthly cholesterol drug, for that Ann Taylor outfit and to get into my conference call. Read my next blog and I’ll show you just how painless it is to do it. I’ll also give you my key secrets to competitive bargain hunting. I promise it will be worth it!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local Dial-In Helps Reduce the Cost of Conference Calls

Denver, CO and Atlanta, GA — March 31, 2010 — Copper Conferencing today announced the launch of nationwide local dial-in connections to its On Demand reservationless audio conferencing service. Local dial-in numbers are available in over 100 major cities in the U.S. offering customers a way to connect conference calls at a reduced cost.

“Copper has always been committed to finding ways for its customers to reduce the overall cost of a conference call,” said Carolyn Bradfield, CEO of Copper Conferencing. “Providing local dial-in numbers in addition to toll-free access allows customers to choose how they enter an On Demand audio conference call and enables the customer to control the cost of their conference calls each time they use a local dial-in number.”

An analysis of the thousands of Copper Conferencing customers revealed individuals participating in conference calls generally start or dial in to phone meetings from an office location with 70% of call leaders initiating their conference calls from the same location every time. This study, along with an analysis of the top business markets in the United States, lead Copper to secure local access numbers in 100 key metropolitan areas.

“A customer has a number of ways to determine if his or her city has a local access number,” Bradfield added. “The customer can enter an area code or zip code in the Local Dial-In Locator on the Copper website and the application will identify the local number for that area. If no local number is available, the customer can always use their Copper toll-free access number.”

The announcement of local dial-in services complements Copper Conferencing’s recent upgrades to its On Demand audio conferencing service including additional call controls, new security features, sub-conferencing capabilities and the ability to add personalized greetings to each call as well as the addition of listen and recording download access to conference call recordings via Connect To Copper™, Copper’s powerful online customer portal. In February, Copper Conferencing expanded its web conferencing offering with industry-leading web conferencing services Adobe Connect Pro, Microsoft Live Meeting and Cisco WebEx, all of which are integrated with Copper’s On Demand audio conferencing.

This is the complementary post to my CEO’s recent blog article on dodging the epic snow storm of Spring 2010.

One of the things I enjoy most about living in Colorado is that during certain times of the year we experience some very “capable” weather. In the summer we get great thunderstorms and in the spring we experience snow storms that leave us stranded and up to our necks in cold. But what doesn’t kill us at least makes us strong or better yet makes us flexible.

So after a morning of pushing snow blowers and shoveling snow with the help of my neighbors I was able to clear our long and perilous driveway. A job well done. But if this wasn’t modern times the work wouldn’t be over. I’d need to get in my car and drive down icy roads to get to my office chair. Thankfully though we live in a world where communication and remote access has given us the ability to travel less and live safer.

As a conferencing company we work really hard to live what we preach and as for myself I typically employ three different tools as the foundation of my remote office.

Audio Conferencing – Allows me to host quick phone meetings with my coworkers. It is reservation-less so they only have to know the phone number and my conference id.

BaseCamp – Our project management and collaboration tool. This keeps us all on the same page and helps us to stay focused on the tasks ahead.

IM – By far the easiest way to communicate while I am developing. It’s a classic, but one that has never gotten old. Using Adium I am able to connect with all the different chat clients in the office.

If you run an office or work in one it’s time to start thinking differently. You don’t need to drive everyday, sitting in traffic and wasting time and you certainly don’t need face to face time in order to communicate effectively. With a simple stack of tools you can become a proud member of the club that works where they can when they can.

A while ago, I shared my “mystery shopping” experience in the conferencing industry. For those of you who are unfamiliar, a mystery shopper is someone who uses a service, shops in a store or eats at a restaurant and gives feedback for improvement to the owners.

InterCall was the focus of my mystery shopping adventure when my husband (who has a different last name than mine) attempted to set up a new InterCall account which took weeks and a lot of steps to get simple reservationless conferencing service. After the blog, I think InterCall figured out who my husband was and never delivered the account information or an invoice in the mail.

Had they done that, he would have incurred a $25 invoice fee to get a mailed invoice and a conference minimum fee that would have kicked off when he dialed in to see if his number worked. That would have cost $15. There would have also been a number of other fees and charges and in reality he could have been hit with around $40 in fees and taxes without even conducting one conference call.

We didn’t confine our mystery shopping to InterCall. We also tested Premiere Global (PGi) and had a similarly negative experience. My husband signed up for an account online and purchased a “Ready Conference Plus 100 Pack” for 1 year. What is a Ready Conference Plus 100 Pack, you ask? This bundled price includes 100 minutes a month for $10.95 and you get charged whether you use them or not. Do the math and you’ll realize this service is selling for $.11 a minute for a no-reservation, automated conference call.

We got an invoice this time, opened it, only to be socked with a $20.90 bill without ever dialing in to try the service. Like InterCall, there was an invoice fee to mail the bill, but unlike them there was this fixed monthly charge. There was no customer service number on the invoice and after a lot of searching the web site, we found a “sales number” and were eventually transferred to customer service.

After a 10 minute hold time, we spoke with a customer service person who informed us that this was the service that was signed up for on the website and we were obligated to keep it even though it didn’t suit our purpose. After 5 minutes of attempting to make our point and getting nowhere, we asked to close the account. The agent refused unless we faxed in a request along with a good enough reason to shut it down. (How about – you’re overcharging me and I didn’t use it!) After reasoning with the agent, he agreed to accept an email request to close the account. He never offered an optional service, a better rate, or seemed to care if we used Premiere or not.

Months ago, Copper Conferencing introduced the “Conferencing Bill of Right.s” If you use Premiere or InterCall – the two big guys, you should take this seriously. Unlike the “Goliaths” of the industry, Copper Conferencing will never do the following:
• Charge you to receive an invoice in the mail so you can pay your bill.
• Hide our customer service or billing inquiries number so you can’t find us.
• Not help you find the service that matches your needs.
• Charge minimums or miscellaneous fees not required by the federal government
• Implement crazy pricing packages to disguise high rates

There are a lot of things, however, that we will do:
• Constantly look for ways for you to manage cost
• Make ourselves available if you want to talk to us
• Give you on-line access to your invoices and accounts so you can control your access to information
• Find new ways to connect to us or use our services that make it easier and more efficient for you to conference.

Some conferencing companies have joined the likes of industries like the airline industry that are holding the line on revenue by charging fees instead of finding customers that want to use those services. Remember baggage fees, exit row fees, food fees and other surcharges? Look at your Premiere and InterCall bill and maybe you’ll see some similarities.

Copper Conferencing is not one of the big guys, but we’re definitely one of the good guys!

Carolyn Bradfield is the CEO of Copper Conferencing, a leading provider or audio and web conferencing and wrap-around services to enhance customer experience.
If anyone has seen the classic and Oscar-worthy movie, The Hangover, you can get a perspective of the night’s activity AFTER the show. Keep reading, I’ll get to that in a minute. First, the Channel Partners Show.

One of the side benefits of coming to the Channel Partner’s show is having people with interesting services and technology stop by your booth and let you know what they offer. I’m constantly thinking about what Copper Conferencing’s customers might be interested in. For example, there is a mobile assistant company that has a system for you to call in, dictate notes into their technology and have an email transcript sent to you. I may try that out some time. Another company offers a way to connect to a conference call from any international location through your computer’s speakers. Worthy of looking into.

There were a number of conferencing companies here with us at the show and it comforts me to know that Copper is still very much ahead of the curve in offering our customers more services, more automation and a better customer experience. Our Connect To Copper online customer portal is head and shoulders above any automated account management system. We’re the only company offering nationwide local dial in. Our strategy of offering market leading web conferencing services, integrated with audio, is exactly what customers are looking for. I like who Copper is and how we stack up against the competition.

Also worth noting is that our show was right across the hall from the medical marijuana convention. You should have seen the dreadlocks and the pot leaf imprints on everyone’s clothes. They looked like rejects from a Woodstock concert. Medical marijuana was legalized in Colorado with little to no regulation. Now there are more medical marijuana locations in Colorado than Starbucks. I’m sure the folks at the Lowes Home Improvement convention had a heart attack looking at these guys. Home improvement guys are a conservative group after all.

Now for the Oscar-worthy “The Hangover” moments. We got invited to some cool parties. One of the fun ones ended up at a Smokey Robinson Motown review which was super-cheesy, but a blast to hear the classic old songs. Of course, a few of the guests (who shall remain nameless) left early when they discovered that the singers weren’t going to take their clothes off. Look at the picture – why did they care? I can’t really talk about the rest of the night because my life has been threatened. I’ll leave it up to your imagination.

Just so all of you will know. None of us woke up with a tiger or unidentified baby in our room. We weren’t threatened by Mike Tyson. Nobody pulled out their tooth on a bet. Nobody got married without realizing it. All in all, a successful show and fun experience. Viva Las Vegas and see you next year.
