What were they thinking?
Every now and again, I’ll be somewhere doing something when I have one of those moments when I can’t help but wonder what someone was thinking. I’m fairly certain that everyone has these moments – at least I like to believe that I am not the only person who is left absolutely stunned sometimes by things other people do, say or create.
There are lots of examples throughout history that can be pointed to as examples but the one at top of mind for the moment is the beginning of a song I heard on my way home from work.
I work at Copper Conferencing, which is located in Broomfield, Colorado. It’s a very picturesque setting and my drive home gives me a spectacular view of the Flatirons, a mountain range just west of Boulder, Colorado. I live in Golden, which is about a 35-minute drive from the office. I have time to listen to the radio. I listen to NPR, news or just about anything on. I am not a patient listener always and so on any given drive home I might listen to alternative, classical, country or rock music.
Yesterday on my drive home, I was listening to a country station when the following words floated out from the speakers, “I like your lips like I like my Coca Cola.” I was fascinated to hear what would come next. What could possibly follow up this lyrical dynamo? Really, what could follow a line so fraught with meaninglessness? I had incredibly high hopes. Perhaps “spiced with rum” or “sticky and sweet” or even “brown and tasty,” but no, it was far worse than I had imagined. And even worse was the tune wasn’t extremely fun or catching. Now, it’s not my intention to offend anyone who actually likes this song but I have to wonder just what the writers of this piece were thinking?
Oh, and as for what came next, the words were “oh how it pops and fizzes” — truly a disappointment.
