On the Fly – Dynamic Documents with PHP

My job at Copper Conferencing often includes the automation of common business tasks. After the release of our Copper Link product we began to look at how we could provide more web based services to our agent channel.

Document creation, management, and storage is a tedious task, especially when you have a large base of users who may or may not have the necessary software or ability to operate it. One of our questions has been how can we create customized documents on the fly in a web based environment.

Sticking with standards and simplicity we decided to go with the PDF as our document type and domPDF for our document creation. We were able to glean three major benefits from using domPDF.

  1. domPDF is open source and developed in PHP, allowing for easy customization and roll out.
  2. domPDF creates PDFs from html allowing us to merge existing html and data from our DB into a custom document. Cutting down on document creation time.
  3. We saved storage space by merging code and data and then delivering the PDF file from memory. This means we do not have to store many large and redundant PDF files.

In the end we have developed system that simplifies the creation of custom business documents, the storage of document data and the process of retrieval (anywhere you have a web connection).

Copper Conferencing continues to push the boundaries of the conferencing industry and I’m happy to be a part of that push.
