CEO Blog: Start Spreading the News

I think Atlanta sports fans are fair weather fans.  When the teams do well, we’re all about that.  When they have a dry spell, we stay home.  I know about that because I live here and I’ve had season tickets to both the Falcons and the Braves.

Back in the good old days (‘90’s), the Braves were winning every year.  We had 13 division championships in a row, 2 World Series appearances and a win.  We got complacent and spoiled and then the tide turned.  We weren’t bad, but we weren’t in our glory days either.  So a lot of us good complacent, gave up our season tickets and became fair weather fans.

Now consider other teams like the Cubs and the Yankees.  They could be winning every game or losing every game; it doesn’t matter.  Their fans are rabid, show up at every game, and love their team no matter what.  They have a sense of tradition and destiny.  With the Yankees, that tradition lives on, but there is now a flavor of celebrity that permeates the club.

The Yankees payroll is almost double that of any other team.  They can attract superstars and those superstars are interesting to watch on the field as well as in the tabloids.  Maybe that’s why the rest of people who follow baseball discount their recent achievement in winning their 27th World Series.  No matter what though, the fans, the franchise and the players know how to win ball games and invest in their business to get big dividends in terms of fan base, viewership and those star players who want to win the pinstripes.

Now to Walter.  He works for Copper Conferencing and is from New Jersey.  He is so adamant about the Yankees, that he’s fun to needle.  I decided, even though I didn’t care about the outcome, to bet against him.  I took the Phillies, just because Walter was so committed to the other side.  I thought for a moment I might win the bet.  The Phillies killed them in the first game and staged a comeback to bring the Series to 3-2.  But, the Yankees are a franchise that’s all about winning and they put their big payroll and superstars into high gear and brought it home.

Now to the bet.  Whoever lost would have to go to Manhattan or Philadelphia, schedule sales calls for Copper Conferencing and wear whatever hat or t-shirt of the other person’s choice.  So, start spreading the news…..I’m going to New York and I’m sure Walter will find some painful outfit to remind me of my arrogance in picking the wrong team.  As a sign of my humbleness and respect for the Yankees, I’m also bringing some incredibly low audio conferencing prices as part of my penance.

If you want to visit, see me in my outfit, get some low prices,  (and meet Walter who will likely bully his way onto the plane with me), then let me know.  We don’t even have to talk conferencing.  You can give me a talking to about your beloved Yankees and how and why you win a lot.  I’m ready to take my lumps and concede that you indeed have built the better mousetrap, big payroll or not.
