I’m not a big winter person. I don’t like being cold and I don’t like putting on layers of clothes. I don’t think I’m alone in that regard. That’s why Florida is filling up with people from cold places like Minnesota and Wisconsin. Although spring and summer can be very pleasant, those warm memories are erased pretty quickly with months of ice, snow, wind and cold.

Escaping the cold is a big reason why I take an annual trip to the tropics in the middle of the winter. It’s a break from the cold and energizes me to make it through until March when the weather in Atlanta warms up quite a bit.

Sea Dream at sunset

For all of you who need a winter pick-me-up, let me describe a day in my life on vacation. The sun streams in about 7:00 when you open the curtain and gaze out at the calm water wherever you are docked. The ship has slipped into some harbor and you can see the white, turquoise and yellow bungalows hugging the hillside, looking down at the white sandy beaches below. Breakfast is on deck and you indulge yourself in tropical fruits while the warm breezes waft over you.

Getting off the boat is a leisurely exercise and there’s always some isolated beach waiting for you to plunk down on, relax and enjoy. The surf is never more than a few rolling waves and below the water is an underworld delight of fish and coral in brilliant colors. After a few hours, you can usually walk back past farms and villages to rejoin the others on the boat, enjoying a meal or drink on deck.

At night, the sunset cascades over the ocean as you wait for the mythical “green flash” as the sun dips below the horizon. At night, you can dine on deck and watch as the ship glides out of the harbor into the calm waters to next tropical paradise along the way.

I hope you enjoy the postcards from the tropics. It’s not exactly like being there yourself, but close your eyes and think about the sun, the sand, the blue water and the warm breezes. I may just stay here for a while – it’s awfully tempting!
