Balancing Work & Family

Today nearly 50% of families have two wage earners. One of the biggest challenges people face is how to balance time with family, friends and a career. Everyone who works would like to have a happy, fulfilling life outside of the office, and sacrifices must be made in order to achieve professional goals. However, balance has to be made so those sacrifices do not interfere with your personal goals – other roles such as mother and wife need to fit into an already hectic schedule.

There are many ways to strike a better work/life balance. It begins with setting professional and personal goals and plotting a way to achieve them. It is important to have a trustworthy support team – care-givers for your children, your spouse and co-workers, to help you achieve your goals.

It is important to choose a company that will support your personal and professional goals and aspirations. By doing so you are able to gain the flexibility you need. For example, Copper Conferencing, based in Denver, also offers their employees a laptop computer instead of a traditional desktop computer. This enables employees to work from home when needed, so they can start their day early in the morning or work late at night while family is sleeping.

It is critical that you take care of yourself by eating right, exercising, taking vacations and getting enough sleep. Being a good employee, spouse or mother means being good to you first. Also, taking some time off for yourself will benefit you, your family and your co-workers.

Embrace technology to make your life easier! Copper Conferencing offers both audio and web conferencing. This technology cuts down on travel time. You are able to meet with people in your company all over the world with a phone call. You can do presentations or training sessions via the web, right from your living room.

Get organized and be flexible. When you are organized you schedule items like e-mail and important meetings. You learn how to set priorities, delegate, and work smarter instead of harder. Be able to forgive yourself when things don’t get done and remember that things can change at a moment’s notice.

Understand control. It is important to think about what being in control means. Many times we feel we have more control if we do everything ourselves. We try to be everything to everybody, but by doing so you can burn out quickly. It is efficient to delegate, or divide work to accomplish needs and wants. You can stay in control by letting go.

The bottom line is that we all make sacrifices to get what we want. You may not want to get to the very top, but it is important to think about where you want to go and what it will take to get there. I gain satisfaction from feeling that I am a role model to my children and that I am viewed as a hard and dedicated worker. When you set your priorities and look at the big picture, it’s a lot easier to fit everything into place.
